Thousands of Brus had been lodged in Tripura relief camps since 1997 in the wake of communal tension triggered by the brutal killing of a forest guard by Bru National Liberation Front militants.
The incident occurred when around 25 people were crossing the old bridge over a stream in the village, over 100 kms from Pune. The iron bridge is 25 years old and was rusting at the foundation due to stream water.
Ophthalmologist Dr Govinda Venkataswamy, the founder of Aravind Eye Hospital, was conferred the Padmashree award in 1973 for his service to the nation.
