Indian army officials have said that Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing towards Indian posts and villages in Uri, Baramulla district on Thursday, that continued throughout the night.
The incident occurred when around 25 people were crossing the old bridge over a stream in the village, over 100 kms from Pune. The iron bridge is 25 years old and was rusting at the foundation due to stream water.
Ophthalmologist Dr Govinda Venkataswamy, the founder of Aravind Eye Hospital, was conferred the Padmashree award in 1973 for his service to the nation.
