In This Uttarakhand Village, Menstruating Girls Are Not Allowed to Attend School

The remote village follows the age-old tradition of keeping girls and women out of the kitchen and temple during menstruation. On an average, they sit home for 80 days in a year, thus missing the school.
The incident occurred when around 25 people were crossing the old bridge over a stream in the village, over 100 kms from Pune. The iron bridge is 25 years old and was rusting at the foundation due to stream water.
Ophthalmologist Dr Govinda Venkataswamy, the founder of Aravind Eye Hospital, was conferred the Padmashree award in 1973 for his service to the nation.
