Inadequate immunisation, patchy coverage of booster doses and the unavailability of accessible drugs have combined to give India the dubious title of being the world leader in diphtheria cases.
The incident occurred when around 25 people were crossing the old bridge over a stream in the village, over 100 kms from Pune. The iron bridge is 25 years old and was rusting at the foundation due to stream water.
A thick haze has engulfed the national capital two days ahead of Diwali, following which, experts have warned, the air quality is likely to worsen further due to local factors.
